On
2nd August the 25th anniversary of Gulf war has passed. On
this day Iraq Invaded it’s tiny oil rich neighbor Kuwait. Emir of Kuwait and his family and other government official fled to
Saudi Arabia. Iraq established their provincial government in Kuwait. UN Security Council denounced the
invasion and demanded an immediate withdrawal of Iraq from Kuwait. on 6th
august UN Imposed a worldwide ban on trade with Iraq. On 22nd
November UN Security Council passed a resolution to use of force against Iraq
if it will failed to Withdrew their forces by 6th January 1991. But
the Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein
Refused to withdraw his force .then on 16th February the Operation Desert Storm declared.
Around 32 countries allied with the supreme commandant of US army and started
massive bombardment. On February 28 US President George Bush declared Ceasefire and UN passed a resolution on April
3 and on 6th April Iraq accepted the resolution and April 11 it
became in effect. But Saddam Hussein violated the peace treaty further and UN
increased the Sanctions on the oil sale. This lead to the death of around One
million Iraqi Civilians due to inadequate Supply of food, medicines as the
consequences.
What
is the Reason for this gulf war, there was some political Dispute behind this. Iraq
claimed that Kuwait is not an Independent State it was a province of Basra
during the time of Ottoman Empire.
Kuwait’s ruling dynasty Al-Sabah
family signed a Protectorate agreement with Britain in 1899. Britain drew a
border between the Iraq and Kuwait.this border entirely locked Iraq geographically. Also Iraq have a controversy with Kuwait in
Kuwait’s exceeding oil production quota in OPEC
(Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). Due to the subsequent war
of Iraq with Iran resulted a damage in Iraq’s Economy. So that they have forced
to increase the price oil per barrel but Kuwait and Saudi Arabia does not
Decreased their production and also Iraq has a dispute with Kuwait for their slant
drilling across the border into Rumaila
Oil Field in Iraq.
A
diplomatic discussion Conducted for solving the dispute between Kuwait and Iraq
in Jeddah, KSA by Arab league. In this discussion Iraq
demanded an amount of 10 billion $ for the loss of their revenue through
Rumaila Oil field. But Kuwait offered 9 billion $. Saddam ordered to invade
Kuwait by bombing Kuwait City the capital of Kuwait.
As
a result the US led Coalition forces got victory and Non Iraqi Flying zone also
established. Operation Desert Storm officially ended on 1995. A huge number of
human Casualties and a large number of Kuwait citizen absconding happened. This
invasion ruined the relationships between Saddam and western countries got
ruined. US and western countries supported Saddam in Iraq-Iran war.
Invasion
of Kuwait was one of the great false decision by Saddam. Later he deposed by US
troops on 2003 and executed on 30th December 2006.
